I believe that the best tutor is flexible and can adjust to the individual student's learning style. I think it is important to praise achievements, no matter how small, and to reinforce a student's learning in weak areas. One of the most important parts of tutoring is keeping students engaged. One of my specialties is creating visual lessons, especially in math. I have also received specialized training in tutoring reading.

I have two Bachelor's Degrees- one in Theater from West Virginia University, and one in Elementary Education from Western Governors University. My certifications include Elementary Education in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and Art in Pennsylvania. I also hold a TEFL, which qualifies me as a teacher of English as a Second Language.

I have served as an online tutor for eleven years, beginning as an English as a Second Language tutor with international students. For the past six years, I have tutored students in grades 2-6 in reading and math. These include regular and special education students. The special education students have included children with ADHD and ASD.

My mission

I especially enjoy tutoring students who have fallen through the cracks of the regular school system. These include students who have problematic behaviors or have unique learning styles. I believe that every child can learn and each child simply needs someone with the patience and knowledge to help them. Each success I have with these students inspires me!

My Story

I grew up in suburban New Jersey and was lucky enough to attend excellent public schools. My original ambitions were in acting, but life intervened and I later returned to college and earned a degree in elementary education. About twenty years ago I moved to eastern Pennsylvania where there is cultural enrichment everywhere! I live with two spoiled animals, one dog and one cat. They are best buddies! To satisfy my creative side, I spend my spare time doing artwork in a variety of mediums.

Cognitive Diversity

How I adapt to students with diverse intellectual needs.

In reading, I first determine the current grade level of the student, and then plan lessons with the goal of getting the student to work at the grade level appropriate for their age. I focus on phonics and use a variety of educational websites as materials resources. I also use poetry when tutoring reading. Poetry provides assistance for reading comprehension. I like to use learning games to keep students engaged.
In math, I create visuals to aid in understanding. I review all lessons to ensure students have learned concepts. I also work to attain grade level, and include learning games to keep students engaged.

I have worked with gifted students in math, at grade 6 level. Some of these students were also on the autistic spectrum. I helped them improve their math work while managing certain behaviors which impeded their progress.

I have worked with students grades 2-6 who have ADHD. I use stretching breaks and learning games to keep these students engaged! I have tutored reading and math to this population.

I have tutored students on the autistic spectrum, mostly students who in the past were labeled as having Asberger's Syndrome. I have tutored these students, grades 2-6, in both reading and math.
