I am a dedicated and devoted veteran teacher experienced in teaching in many diverse communities in California, Scotland, and England. I encourage my students to take an active and positive approach to their learning, guiding them with a nurturing and efficient approach that insists on fundamentals of grammar and writing, challenging vocabulary, meaningful and relevant assignments, and competitive rigor. I challenge my students with stimulating and thought-provoking non-fiction texts as well as great literature from the Western literary canon that allows for deep analysis of characters, motifs, language, themes, and ideas, as well as students' own actions and beliefs so that they become engaged and discerning critical thinkers. I focus on grammar, varying sentence construction, in-depth analysis of rhetoric, argumentation, research and synthesis of sources, philosophy, and debate. I am committed to ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE and to the nurturing of DECENT, LOVING, AND RESPONSIBLE human beings.

I received my Bachelor of Arts in English with an Emphasis in Business from the
University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). I was a member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority and an overseas student at Warwick University, UK. My final Thesis was on the theme of "The Volunteer Victim of Vampire Aesthetics." I took my Post Graduate Certificate in Education (Equivalent to a Professional Clear Credential) at Manchester Metropolitan University/Crewe and Alsager College in Cheshire, England. I hold a Master of Arts in English Language, Rhetoric, and Literature from National University in San Diego, where my Final Thesis was on the subject of "The Freudian Implications of Mary Shelley's Victor Frankenstein."

I have spent several decades tutoring various students either in their homes, at a library, or online. I enjoy coming to students' homes and them feeling comfortable in their own environment, learning at their own kitchen or dining room tables, but I also book the library reading rooms for a more academic location, if that is more conducive for the learner. The pandemic also made me quite adept at online tutoring. My last tutoring gig was online with two cousins in eighth grade, guiding them through beautiful short stories and poems, plus composition writing, creative writing, and English Language Arts assignments so they felt confident and ready for their online classes and beyond.

My mission

Here is my mission: To do good. To be good. To share the goodness in the world. I hope to continue to teach students levels 5th grade to college and watch their growth and development into fine members of the community. I am keen to be a part of a thriving network that values values, ethics, and morals. We, as adults and mentors, can lead our students to make good decisions and to encourage them to take a keen interest in their lessons as those lessons will be interesting – and often complex – and will strengthen Modulo students to pursue excellence on many fronts. I shall champion the idea of dedication: to instruct in a kind and gentle manner and assist all students to pursue academic excellence, to express themselves artistically, and to develop their understanding of the world around us.

My Story

As a little girl, I read to my dolls and my teddy bears. I made my own library on my front porch. Those were the activities that made me happy. I am a native Californian (second generation) and am very proud to be so. My father was also a native Californian. Both my parents were avid readers, and I was instilled at an early age to love reading, voraciously reading throughout my life, where I often choose to read more frequently than turning on – what my father called – the “stupidvision.” My son Alex, now thirty-three and a pilot, still reads and talks about his books to me. It is ingrained in my whole family. My life is a happy one, even if I do not read to my dolls anymore -- or my teddy bears.

Cognitive Diversity

How I adapt to students with diverse intellectual needs.

My many years of experience teaching English to middle and high school students have provided valuable professional development, focusing on teaching the Common Core Standards in the 21st century and critical analysis; for example, building vocabulary, increasing comprehension, and incorporating textual evidence in organized prose. I implement instructional strategies that support English Learners, Students with Special Education Needs, and gifted students with various scaffolds and enrichment activities, leading to more student success, especially when students were given one-on-one time with their tutor. I take into consideration that certain students may require remediation, and I will take the time to break down the art of composition, sentence variation, and grammar with solid drills, including various online platforms that assist in student engagement and learning.

Many of my students needed guidance to harness their gifted qualities and help with dealing with their neurodivergence. I first diagnose the situation and come up with creative and helpful ways to address these issues so learning can happen with positive feedback, high expectations, and joy.

Gifted myself, and parenting a gifted child myself, I have a great affinity to advance my gifted students to the next level with an accelerated curriculum and careful selection of quality materials that engage your learner, guiding them to achieve in multiple arenas from analysis to discussion, from concise writing to argumentation, from JD Salinger to Joseph Conrad.

I have a great affinity to advance my profoundly gifted students to the next level with an accelerated curriculum and careful selection of quality materials that engage your learner, guiding them to achieve in multiple arenas from analysis to discussion, from concise writing to argumentation, from JD Salinger to Joseph Conrad.

Working with students with ADHD throughout my years as a teacher will help me to deal with these students in a calm but firm manner to keep them on task and learning from engaging curriculum that stimulates their interest.
