I'm a teacher with over twenty-five years experience, both online and in the brick-and-mortar classroom. I have a master's degree in psychology and a master's in education.

M-Fri 10-3 pm EST, Evenings 4-9 I'm available, with a few exceptions each day. I'm available on most Saturdays, but not on Sunday.

I individualize each session for the learner, being sensitive to the learner's strengths, weaknesses, learning style, and the things that most excite them. I try to use special interests in reward systems and in discussion to hold the student's attention.

B.A. Psychology, M.A. Psychology, Ed.S. Guidance and Counseling, Additional post-graduate credits in special education, passed Praxis test in Teaching Mild-Moderate Disabilities. I work most often with special populations.

I taught for two years in the brick-and-mortar classroom, followed by teaching online for the past 23 years. I work with all age groups and I can teach basic reading as well as AP English. I'm also a Sunday School teacher at my church.

My mission

My mission is to be a supportive and encouraging presence in the life of my students. I often direct them to use skills that they didn't know they have. I want learning to be fun and for my lessons to be effective at bringing my students to a level of mastery. The picture below conveys the sense of adventure that infuses my teaching. I like to make learning an exciting journey of discovery.

My Story

I started tutoring because tutoring is a lot more satisfying than classroom teaching for me, because I am at my best when working one on one. I do my most effective teaching in the tutoring environment, and I love it so much I made a career of it many years ago. The picture below is me with the plastic typewriter I got for Christmas one year. I've always loved writing, in all its forms! My teaching demo is at https://youtu.be/8lFd6OhFgSc?si=Z5v0MdfwW4kPcgL5 I made this demo three years ago, but it's a good example of my teaching style.

Cognitive Diversity

How I adapt to students with diverse intellectual needs.

I have taught a lot of 2E kids. In fact, 2E is my specialty. Tutoring sessions are a great fit for 2E kids. I have worked with 2E kids for two years in the classroom as a special education teacher, and over twenty years online. For example, right now I have a math genius who reads on a fifth grade level. He is 15 years old. He has one of the largest skill discrepancies I have seen in a 2E student.

I often work with gifted students.

I sometimes work with profoundly gifted students.

I've worked a lot with ADHD, both in the classroom and online. I've specifically worked with many children who are 2E and who also have ADHD.

All of the students I have now have autism spectrum disorder, and most are 2E. I've worked with autism a lot over the past 20+ years.

I work occasionally with dyslexia.

Kids with autism, ADHD, and other disabilities most often also have sensory processing challenges, which I have worked with continually throughout my career.
